Cost of Cremation

With funerals costing between $7,000 and $12,000, you may want to find ways to make this as inexpensive as possible. Aside from mandatory funeral home fees, you have a lot of freedom. In the end, however, there are two main choices - burial and cremation.

What is the Process?

The cremation process involves a short series of steps that involve identification, authorization, paperwork, and retrieval.

Family members must first confirm the identity of the deceased, at which an identifying tag is placed on the body. Loved ones then fill out the necessary paperwork to authorize the process.

At the crematorium, accessories such as jewelry are removed from the body and the body is cleaned. It is then placed in an incineration chamber. A processor then compresses the ashes, which are then placed in a container. Loved ones are then able to retrieve the remains.

How Does Cremation Compare to Burial?

Cremation is much less expensive due to what you don’t have to purchase.

With burials, the caskets are more expensive, and the cemetery may require vaults to go along with them. Other expenses, such as the hearse to transport the body to the cemetery are also omitted.

Here is the breakdown of costs you won’t have to cover:

  • Hearse – $750
  • Burial casket – $2,500
  • Vault – $1,495
  • Burial-associated fees set by the cemetery

At the very least, you are saving $4,745.

On the other hand, a cremation involves these costs:

  • Cremation casket – $1,200
  • Third party’s cremation fee – $350
  • Urn – $295

Cremation caskets and urns are optional expenses here, as you can opt for a different type of cremation container and ash storage method.

This discrepancy in expenses is why the average for a funeral with burial costs between $7,640 and $9,135 (depending on if the cemetery requires a vault), and the average cremation falls below the average funeral cost range at $5,150 and $6,645.

What if I Don’t Want a Funeral Service?

The lowest cost option available is a direct cremation. Here, the funeral home takes the body from the place of death and directly transports it to the crematorium. With this, you do not have to pay costs such as embalming, funeral and viewing service fees, and body preparation. Instead, you can expect to pay roughly $2,300 for a direct cremation.
